Over the past several years there has been quite a buzz about PRP or Platelet-Rich Plasma and its many uses.
What is PRP?
Plasma is one of the components already found in your blood, along with red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are mainly known for their role in the blood clotting process. However, platelets contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important to the healing process.
In order to obtain plasma with a greater concentration of platelets than usual, blood must be drawn from the patient and then spun at a fast rate in a machine called a centrifuge. Through this process the plasma and platelets are separated from other blood components. The remaining platelet-rich plasma is a clear yellow liquid.
How Does PRP Work?
Studies have shown that the growth factors found in PRP can create fresh tissue, produce collagen, and speed healing of injuries. PRP has been proven to improve such musculoskeletal injuries such as tendonitis of the elbow (I was successfully treated with PRP for this last year), bone grafts in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and is recently being used to treat hair loss in men and women, rejuvenate aging skin and improve the appearance of stretch marks and scars. Results and cost vary on the area being treated and number of treatments required to achieve desired results.
I am personally trying all of these treatments and will keep readers posted on my progress 🙂 via our social media channels so stay tuned.
